these birds arrive anytime during the day to feed on the native shubs in my garden...... easy shots from the balcony..... full frame image

500mm Mirror lens hand held, 90th f8 Nikon D2Xs..... yes I was leaning on the rail

this forum is tough........34 lookers and not a word........ makes you not want to post pixs anymore.......

this image is not really that bad for a quick grab shot, I have seen a lot worse on this forum in times gone by and a lot said........ and yes I have taken better bird pixs than this one but as bird photographers will know, these creatures are very flighty and hard to get a pix of in the wild.....

please comment on images you look at, good or bad, or just say you don't like the shot...... there are a lot of good pixs that go by and not a word is said about them, must make the photographer feel good about his or her work

We could all help the new togs with simple comments, only with taking lots of pixs, help from other members with comments, and trying a lot do new photographers improve. I have seen a lot of members work improve over the last few years, so let give the others a helping hand with the odd comment

As for this image. It's SUnday and many people are busy - at weekends. 34 views and no comments means bugger all IMHO. 340 and no comment would be different

As for the image. It comes across very much as you describe it "a quick grab shot" and this would be one I'd normally refrain from commenting on since I know you've been around long enough to know what's wrong with the shot. Since I'm commenting though I'd say the foreground twig is distracting and it's a little clutterd. Nothing terrible about the shot, but not a standout. If it was one of my images I'd be happy to have got it, but I probably wouldn't be posting it for critique.

I, too, don't think it has the best composition, but a couple of positives:
- the colour of the bird is excellent
- no donuts from the mirror lens!

Nothing excellent about it, but nothing awful either.
I viewed it and thought 'nice'.
Cos I didn't comment doesn't mean a thing.
Quality rather than quantity.

Well Big Pix, I must admit I've probably been responsible for about 4 of the views, I'm currently surfing on two PCs, and had been logged out on each so was just viewing what was new, and not commenting.. I usually do that in bulk when I'm not distracted by other things (like watching movies/tv at the same time.

Given the lens used, I think the image quality is impressive and there is no sign of the doughnut bokeh, that said the second biggest problem I have with this shot is the background, or lack there of.. it's just bland, grey and boring.. the first problem is obviously the twigs in the forground.. but you can't position a wild bird so you get what you can. The shot is sharp and the colours vibrant but the background is actually the more I look the bigger problem of the two.. as the twigs make it seem more like a wild shot rather then a tame lorikeet.

These birds are so hard to get a decent shot of i know because i have been trying recently of a tree in front of my place that these birds have started to frequent and so far nothing great. So congrats on getting such a sharp image but obviously the twigs in front of the bird are distracting but still a great shot.

thanks all........ Craig the grey is the road down the side of my house as I live on a hill and I am on the corner. The garden has lots of natives, and as the birds are now starting to get use to having a camera poked at them they are starting to forget I am around....... thats Around not round.....

you only get donuts with the 500 mirror lens if there are lots of highlights in the image background...... overcast day, I was lucky

That image has a beautiful quality about it and you deserve praise for having crafted it. Now...about that 1/4 plate you have...how the hell do you eat off it?

those birds come to my garden almost every morning and I can't get a shot of them. Light is an issue as they come around 6am.

If an image is posted in "Image Reviews and Critiques", then any member may comment on it.

Just as we may sometimes not like the photographs posted by others, we may sometimes also disagree with a critique of our own photo.

But AFAIK, freedom of expression is alive and well on this forum.

Nice shot of the bird... but kind of an average photo, Bernie.

Out of interest or boredom, I ran some quick stats on the last 50 or so Image R&C posts and:

The average number of replies as a percentage of watches is 5.01%
The minimum number of replies as a percentage is 0.0%
The maximum number as a percentage is 11.76%.

Before this post, your percentage of 6.52% was above average
Whilst not included in the sample, I have had a recent thread which would be included in the above minimum!

I guess my conclusion is that many people will walk past and have a look, but you can't expect everyone to stop and say something!

Personally I like the photo, It's bright and colourful, and is very natural looking, it has a candid quality about it. The clutter of branches around the animal in no way detracts from it as this adds to the feeling of the bird being in its element

Being an owner of an F8 500mm mirror lens, i can appreciate how hard it is to get a photo of this quality using that lens.

Well done.
