Very nice collection, and very sharp, can I ask what lens and settings you were using ?

Canon 90-300USM. I think from memory around F5, ISO100

The long end of this lens leaves a bit to be desired, will be sourcing a 400mm by the next airshow I attend (that and you really do need 400mm to get some of the high action shots, 300mm just does not cut it)

Well Cordy I'm most impressed by the apparent sharpness in these shots, even if you find the 90-300 lacking at the long end (lacking sharpness, speed, or a combination of the two?). I do have to ask, are all these shots the full frame, or have you cropped them, as with each I feel like I'd like a little more breathing space between the edge of frame and the subject.

The sharpness on the right hand side of No 2 is fantastic - it reminds me of a Tamiya model aircraft from my distant childhood days! As others have said, a wider crop would be better, I think.

The lens lacks some sharpness and is definitely not as fast as I would like, to shoot fast jets anyway. There was some pp done to the shots, but not a lot - one USM pass, levels

The only shot that is full frame from memory is the 2nd one, the two others are cropped. With aircraft photos I dont like leaving too much "dead space" around the aircraft, but still like to maintain a 6x4 ratio of sorts - its a habit I have gotten into with these style of shots.

I can actually see where Canon's IS will help me significantly in creating crisper images and the 100-400mm lens I've been looking at has IS. That and I find it easier to keep a heavier lens steadier, I tend to move a small lens around a bit too rapidly

I'm gonna go the opposite and say i reckon the tight crops are great, number 2 is my pic because of the sharpness and the heat haze.

Quite, its a case of requiring fast AF and shooting continuous. Some of these jets were seriously moving too, 600-700 kts (1000 kmh)

1 and 2 are outstanding. Makes me want to go to an airshow this year.
