wow book - art direction

i was involved in a big project last year, it just launched last week
it was a coffee table book featuring 100 inspirational sydney women shot by 10 top sydney photographers, profits go to charity Unifem
available at David Jones 'Women of the World'

my involvement was concept, art direction and final composition and post production 1 month planning

shots were taken by tito antonio

i consulted with studio tech Marc Stanley on lighting design

this is very commerically appealing work very illustrative and constructed not my preferred style but it's interesting to share the experience

Art direction plays a huge role in a shoot like this
every detail from the styling to poses and technical aspects had to be formulated in my head and communicated to everyone involved
and of course we were shooting celebrities not models and everyone had their own ideas so the balance was har

concept was to capture 1 character trait of the person and then juxtapose them on a background that suited their personality trait or contrasted it

bianca dye
new york bianca is singing into a radio awards trophy she won

amber petty
background saville in spain, suits the outfit, killer pose

Chloe Maxwell was a model so she was good to direct
Image

connie Mitchell from Sneaky sound System
concept here is quite deep and quirky
strong women defying convention stands confidently over perceived classical perceptions of beauty venus de milo from the louvre
but its juxtaposed over a background of the hermitage museum russia
anyway no one really noticed the concept

Wendell

This is brilliant

How much of what we are looking at here is your work? Photos? compositing? etc

Edit: Sorry Wendell, just read the linked page (very informative)

thankyou i appreciate it

lighting design, concept, art direction, final composition, editing, retouching, compsoiting

the lighting was complex so Marc the studio tech had his work cut out for him in some shots there are 3 lights
and we all had to pre-visualise my ideas because studio shots were taken first and it was up to me to merge it seamlessly with backgrounds so lighting and pose had to be contextual

cocnept and art direction is the biggest aspect of my contribution the

photographer Tito Antonio and myself worked on the poses

it was interesting working in a group as art director i think it was my first time doing so, there were lots of arguments but we all worked together in the end

usually when i art direct i photograph and produce the end result i.e Fred Bare campaign

dan thankyou

but don't give up thats the first rule to get anywhere

really anything is possible you just need to simplifiy and work things out step by step as your byline says its very very true

if you deconstruct the image making process from concept to final rendition youll see it's not that complex

These are of the incredibly high standard we have come to expect from you, Wendell.

I must say, your fashion shots have piqued my interest in fashion where there was none before, such is the quality of your work.

Shockingly well done, but I am with you on that it isn't your usual (or my) taste.
