Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Find out more about B&W white conversion that is.
I've just downloaded the Convert to B&W pro plug-in for Photoshop.
Here's pic I took of Ryan this afternoon and it's my first conversion using the new plug-in.

So what do you think, both of the picture and the conversion?

Mark, that is a lovely shot of Ryan.

It looks good and quite powerful in B&W.

Gotta love that shot.

Cheers, Mick :) :) :)

Photo looks good.

Can i ask though what is the difference between using a B&W plugin or specialised filters as opposed to just a quick B&W conversion?

It's a nice conversion. The skin makes me feel like the image has been passed through an orthochromatic filter (blue & green) and that suits his face quite nicely.

iGBH... it really comes down to preference. I find that filters are better for conversions since I can save the way I've previously worked in a darkroom as well as match film-types I use including grain a lot more easily.

There's no correct way to convert to B&W... just whatever your preference is.

Spot on. The background Bokeh was predominatly green, I adjusted the green slider to get the background tones I wanted, balanced with the tones on the face.

iGHB - Yep, what Nnnnsic has said. Previously I'd desaturate the image then adjust levels, curves and contrast. I usually adjusted then re-adjusted which seemed to go on forever and still not get the effect I was after.

I also d/loaded the alien skin exposure plugin last night and must say that it's easier to use and more comprehensive with the film presets. Besides that I'm finding I can do the conversion in about 5mins as opposed to the 20 it used to take me using levels, curves ect.... and what's more I'm actually happy with the result when I finish. I have been know to spend 20-30mins a pic in the past and simply deleted the image because I didn't like it.

Mick - Thanks. I caught a bit of what Leigh was showing you last weekend, that's what made me search for the plug-in.

Pehpsi - Thanks for the comment.

Here's another I ran thru Alien Skin Exposure using the "Kodak TRI-X pushed 2 stops" preset. (Thanks for the tip Chris. )
