Took my new 30D and 70-200 F4 out on a friend's boat today and chased some wildlife. Bit tricky photographing on a rocking boat but some shots came out OK.

For those who don't know, this is a pelican, surely the world's most oft photographed bird?


This is an osprey, or hawk, or some sort of critter.


Feathers splayed for maximum lift.

My guess is an osprey, but my wife said it's a hawk??

I don't see any hawks that look like it in Simpson and Day, but there is an Osprey in there that looks rather similar to your pic I cant see it being anything else really.
The band around the neck and dark patch on the front of the wings are distinctive.

Gordon, this is a photo of an osprey that I posted in March, taken in the same river system as I was today.

Maybe it's a cousin to osprey #1??
