Holiday blues

finally back on line again after a month holidaying in SE Asia.

Sadly my first venture with my new 17-55 f2.8 didn't produce a great many keepers in the early days....

..even sadder is that I return home empty handed

- my trusty and much loved D70s and newly purchased 17-55 f2.8 (plus BW filter and 4GB card) are now being peddled somewhere in Thailand having been taken from our room in Phuket. (Couldnt put it all in the bloody room safe could I?)

the long insurance process is underway but its the loss of the pics in- camera of family, friends and locals that I will never get back.

in the scheme of things though its still just a camera and lens and we all returned safely with lots of good times and memories..

I hope some of the ones I did manage to burn to disc in Laos will be worth posting at a later date.

(Do we have a place to list stolen gear details just on the off chance someone in Australasia is dumb enough to list it for sale?) I have also posted on other forums.

cheers

Damien, sad to hear about that but one could see it as a silver lining - you could swap over to Canon now :)

I dont think I'm heading to the dark side yet..still got my 70 -200VR, 50 1.4 18 -70 and SB 800 plus all the bits and pieces.. juast no body to use them on!!

maybe if I was a pro sports photographer I could afford to make the shift!

I just hope the AUS $ stays strong and the current pricings are still operating if and when an inusrance settlement eventuates.

See you round the place (I'll be the one with the Sony Compact and bag full of superflous gear

(to help overcome my loss I went out and bought an new Crumpler bag in SGP just to make me feel better!!

cheers

Hi Damian,

Very sorry to hear about this. We just came back from holidaying in Thailand for 4 weeks and I'm surprised to hear your news as I always thought hotels in Thailand were very safe.

What hotel in Phuket was this?

Hope you get all the money from insurance, but as you said it's the photos that can't be replaced.

Alex

Hi Kris,

A lot depends on the place where you are staying. If the place is reasonable then you are pretty safe. Some hotels have safe in the room but the space is limited. If not, then ask about security deposit boxes at the reception, most hotels provide them and whilst inconvenient at times, they are probably the safest bet.

Good luck
Alex

Our accommodation in Phuket is a five star hotel, as part of a chain. Fingers crossed they are ok

Thanks for the 'condolescences' folks..nice to know people take such an interest.

My kids have said I'm handling the loss of my 'third child' pretty well but of course I can replace this one (hopefully in the not too distant future)

Kris I think it was just a case of bad luck - some cleaner or tradesmen at the hotel probably just saw the opportunity to cash in and make more money in one go than they can in months of work. this of course can happen anywhere but this is the first time for me after many trips and stays in SE Asia over the years.

I definitely have no gripes about the hotel (Laguna) or Thailand and we will probably return there again but just be a little more careful with storing items.

best advice would be to buy one of those wire mesh locakble nets you can put around your gear..they would make it pretty tough to get in to.

Footy season has just kicked off so I am keen to get back into pics - once i get a figure from the insurance company I'll decide what combo to go with next - any news out there on an updated D200?

cheers
Damian
