Posting and reviewing images

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

A couple of recent instances have moved me to reiterate what this section is all about. Please read the following extract from our FAQ page:

Viewing requirements for this site
All who view or post on this site need to do so with their sense of humour intact and with a sense of levity.

This site is a great place for camaradarie, learning, receiving criticism and praise (hopefully in equal measure), lusting after equipment, etc. It is not for making attacks on other people or their beliefs, nor is this a site for taking one's self at all seriously.

Many posts made here have a humurous element to them and hopefully the reader can appreciate that. Few of us here make a living with a camera and the ones which do seem to have a great sense of humour, so for the rest of us it is an interest or hobby, maybe not worth getting as upset as some have become recently.

Of all the posts and images seen here, not one will cure cancer, bring people back from the dead or bring about world peace. That being the case, let us just all enjoy the amusement to be found here. :)

Any member, regardless of age or experience (or talent!) can post an image. As the heading says, the image is then open to review and critique.

What WILL happen:
- members and visitors will look at your image

What MAY happen:
-members may post a critique
- the critiques may be positive or negative, and you should be prepared for either
-perhaps no-one will post a critique (get over it, and post another one!)

If you see an image that you like, don't be afraid to say so, together with the reasons that you admire it.

If you see an image that you don't like, you may also say so, but please give constructive criticism that may be useful to the photographer. Of course, flaming is just not tolerated here.

Don't forget that you learn a lot from making a mistake (ie a photograph that is not quite on the money) if people are prepared to tell you and you are prepared to listen.

Above all, as it says in the FAQ, have fun. :D

Thanks Trevor the the timely reminder, I think you've made it clear what people should expect, hopefully we won't need another one for a long time :)

Great reminder Trevor.
May I also add on that the MAX size per image posted (as per the FAQ) is that the widest side be no bigger than 800pixels and the image size less than 200kb. This helps those of us not using broadband and those that don't have huge screens.
