The change in background is due to my slight change in position as I inched ever closer. Firstly as I was pointing slightly down at the bird there was beach and sand and then as I slid down the embankment I got closer and lower relative to the bird some sky and ocean in the background.

Hiya Mark :)

I actually prefer the first of these, I think the background colour suits the bird better. I also think the angle is slightly better.

It may be the conversion for Web, but it seems the focus is slightly in front of the bird, which is a pity. I'd probably have stopped down a couple too - maybe to f4 - even if it meant I had to bump up the ISO.

Great captures all the same, and as good as most you see in nature books. Not up to NatGeo standard though ;)

Good shots of a colourful bird, but as sheepie says, I don't think you quite nailed the focus.
