Once a year I go the local rally and try my hand. All shot round 70 mm, couple with the 70 - 200 2.8 VR and a couple with the 18 - 70 kit lens.

and a couple from the veteran section...

They are all from the same corner...and at the end of the day I think I collected half the road surface on my gear.... :) :) :)

Nice mate. That 70-200 Vr is a sharp lens, and you've done well to get such nice sharp shots. Maybe a slightly slower shutter spped, to help increase wheel blur. You've nailed the exposure, with nice contrasty shots.

Well done!

Thanks guys, all shot at ISO 200 (lowest ISO on D70)

#1 WRX : 2.8, 1/640 at 75 mm (70-200 VR) CP filter
#2 Hyundai : 2.8, 1/500 at 95 mm (70 - 200 VR) CP filter
#3 Porsche : 4.5, 1/1000 at 70 mm (18 - 70 Kit)
#4 Datsun : 4.5, 1/1250 at 70 mm (18 - 70 Kit)

I was shooting at widest aperture I could to try and separate subject from background. Interested to read Alan's comment on another thread that shallow DOF doesn't usually work well in motor sports however. :)

The last two shots were taken before the first two. I put the CP on to reduce the light as much as anything once the faster lens was on but the shutter speed is still too fast to give motion blur to the wheels (as Alan indicated). If I keep shooting this stuff wide open then I'll have to get some ND filters to slow the shutter speed some more. But I'll also see how it goes with narrower aperture next time.
