Two fungi macros

Posted: Wed Jun 13, 2007 12:56 pmThanks guys. Pa and ATJ, I'll have another look at the original to see if there some more in the image so the crop won't be so tight.
ATJ, with the stalks, this shot was taken at f16 with the front of the lens only a few inches away from the fungi. Even at f16 you get stuff all dof. If I go up to f22 or even higher to get the dof, I reckon the aperture will be too small to get enough light in. These were taken at ISO 200. Maybe I need to get a S5 so I can go up to ISO 1600 and f22. Now there's a thought.

If that is the case, you're probably not going to see too much difference between f/16 and f/22. Assuming you are using a tripod, you could probably try a range of apertures so you can pick the best DOF for the image.
A larger aperture may have put the stalk more out of focus to make it less noticeable.
To be honest, it is not a big distraction to me and the image is very good as is.

You may also consider moving a little further away from your subject so that you can get a little more DOF. There are some wild fungi out there.

Posted: Sat Jun 16, 2007 6:36 pmThat's a good point Colin. I just returned home half an hour ago from another fungi shoot and after looking at the images thought the exact same thing. Not much dof again. Next time I'll get back a bit further and up ISO so I can go with a slightly smaller aperture.
