I am sure there are plenty of these floating around (no punn intended) and most people are probably sick of them but my inlaws where down for the weekend and wanted to check it out so i took the camera and tripod out just incase.
I started off shooting with the nikon kit lens and then changed to the bargin glass of the century the nikon 50mm 1.8D. You can really tell the diferance in quality even on the camera screen. anyway it started to get dark and this is the last photo i took before thebattery went dead. I would like comment on it as this was IMO the best from the day.
C and C welcome
James

A very mystical shot James - it works for me although I would look at the WB to reduce the green caste in the lights

agree, very impressive, and a unique image indeed.
as you descibe, and very fine example where a prime eats a kit zoom. I think your kit zoom would have presented many colored flare circles (lens flare) from those lights.
Love the shutter speed!!! Long enough to capture the shape of waves, but softens them, and the multiple waves splashed up at the stern, look great.
Very nice, thank you

Top shot, I think they should leave the bloody thing there - great tourist attraction shame it has so much fuel/oil onboard! Chris (Sirhc) has made some excellent suggestions re WB.

thanks for the comments
I took heaps of photos. some with slow shutter so that the boat looks like it is sitting on fog almost and other with really sharp waves and splashes but as you say i think this one has a really good mix.
Yeah i was really stoked about the star affect and as you say it isn't really great with the kit lens.
I am just so happy with the 50mm. Definatly a must for any camera bag and they would be cheap at twice the price

I think this image is my favourite of all I've seen of the ship.

I really like what the slow shutter has done to the water. The blur of the waves give the ocean a serene feel, as we would expect of a night shot. However the blurred spray up the side of the ship look a lot like fireworks, bringing out the ferocity and the power that put the ship there in the first place.
I find it contrasts brilliantly, while also hinting at the power of the storm that generated the scene as well as highlighting how out of place a ship that big is washed up on a beach.
Nice work.
