Just got back from holidays at Mollymook - Bannisters Head to be precise. We woke up on the first morning to see Rainbow Lorikeets sitting on our balcony, chirping away. I went outside to say hello, when I saw waves crashing on the rocks, and dolphins jumping in the ocean ... hello holidays!

Anyway, here's a few snaps from around Mollymook and Bawley Point. I love the south coast!

These were all taken with a 350D and the 18-55 ... I'm lusting after the 17-85.

Well I live a bit further south but its a great part of the world. Some nice shots but I'm afraid that #4 doesn't work for me...tilted horizon and oversaturated blues in the sky...

I appear to be the total opposite to Shakey. I grew up further North (Shoalhaven) and think that 4 works really well for me. I love the change of angle and think the sky looks weel done.

I also like #3 but then again I have a thing for B & W

I actually prefer the 2nd - vey simple, very sharp and the exposure is great.

I like no 4 as well, although I am not sure about the severe tilt.

the last picture is my favorite from the set. the colours in the sky make in stand out and i don't mind the tilt .

...... ah the South Coast, you just have to love the area as there is so much to enjoy....... here is one from my area.....

about the tilt - I was framing the rock, but not really thinking about the horizon.

And the intense saturation ... I just like to look at pictures like that. I was inspired by a photographer called Peter Lik, whose gallery we visited in Noosa. Some of the pictures seemed like they had lights behind them, they were so bright and colourful. So we bought a little wall calendar (that's all we could afford!) and I get my daily inspiration from that (it hangs above the espresso machine).

But I guess photography is like food, wine, coffee etc etc, in that some people love a certain thing that others don't like.

#2 is my favourite, followed by #4. i like the tilt, makes it interesting. btw: if you are talking about the 17-85 IS. i had an opportunity to use it last weekend. the owner isn't a fan and after using it and seeing the results, neither am i. imo you'd be better served saving for the 17-55f2.8 IS. my sigma outperformed the 17-85 hands down.

#3 does it for me...almost as if the waves and clouds are blending together

really? what didn't you like about it?

I've read comments about it having a bit of barrel distortion at the 17mm end. I'm just looking for a cheapish lens with a bit more width for landscapes and a bit more reach for friends weddings and stuff, without breaking the bank.

I wasn't too happy about the price (Poon's price is way nicer), but it's a lot more affordable for me with a baby coming in 10 weeks and a few other purchases to make inbetween (cot, pram, car seat, portacot, nappies, clothes, ST-E2 etc etc etc).

Matty, Matty, Matty, having been a parent for 6 weeks and 1 day, I am in a sound position to give advice:

Get a car-capsule for the bub - can triple as car seat, cot and pram, saving you a bunch in cash.
Nappies - there is a parenting movement which prescribes for babies to run around and do their business where ever they wish, thus making the need for nappies redundant.
Clothes - you will be given tonnes of clothes.

All of this will help you save enough cash to buy more important things like lenses, etc

(Obviously(?) I am joking).

6 weeks ... wow, time flies!

I might have to pick your brains for more advice. How's the coffee in Dee Why looking?

Coffee in Dee Why....well, I haven't been overwhelmed by the coffee, not that we have been to too many places. Do you have any recommendations?

It's funny, speaking of coffee, we have been to Mecca (King St, CBD) about 6 times in the last few months, and I have bought bags of coffee a couple of times, and they remembered me after about the 4th trip. Great coffee and I have to post a couple of shots of that Mistral they use.

The Danes cafe near Woolworths (Oakes Ave) is pretty good, depending on who's pulling shots. It's worth a few tries. The beans they sell can be fresh but have usually been on the shelves for a bit too long though.

Bacino bar has GREAT scrambled eggs, average coffee. Bearable with sugar.

2kf in Mona Vale uses Campos, and they're almost as good ... the last time I went was a couple of years ago, but they're still there and should still be good.

Cafe Five on Darley St in Mona Vale is ok for coffee too, but great food.

There's some great cafes in Manly that use danes coffee. Ground Zero is probably the one I visit the most, but as usual, it all depends on the barista.

Mecca is great. I catch up with a mate who works a few block away. Shame about being in the shade though, it's freezing in there!

#4 has content that gives it depth, and as such, is my preferred choice. The other 3 pics, although well shot, have content that has no appeal.
