Well, i had to leave my comfort zone for once, and deal with people. I was looking forward to the challenge, and what a bloody challenge it was... The lighting sucked, and you guys were right, it was RED.

I took about 2 shots with my 18-70 f3.5, then took it off straight away as i realized it just wasn't gonna work! All i could do was put the 70-200 on and use the VR like it was designed for, and I've never needed it more!

Anyway, it was a good night, and got shit faced to the bloody max. Let me know what you think too

Also some advice, badly, as I'm doing another band on friday...

(I also get a media pass from now on!!)

All ISO 1600, f2.8, VR, aperture priority.

what kind of shutter speeds were you getting?
heh.. at least the people dont look like they have 99th degree burns (from the red lighting and oversaturation/sensitivity)

convert to b&w and you'll have heaps of options great stuff for a first shot

Wayne is right, but these look a tad thin to me. That's a part of the issue with the red lighting - you need to pull back on your exposure to address the reds, and that leaves you with thin images.

This is especially so when you're already shooting at the limits, as you've no doubt noted, and that is why I choose to add in the dialled down flash. It simply helps to address all of the issues that you're facing, and tat the same time, gives you images that are more manageable.

But these are not bad for a first effort ....

1. She is cute
2. I love Gretsch guitars
3. The BW option is a great idea from Wayne
4. Maybe even some strong PP work, colour shift, that sort of thing.

They're under-exposed.

If this was film, the negatives would be thin

Pehpsi - I just loved the 4th pic and thought, maybe there is latitude within PS to make some radical changes. This result is from manipulating red and magenta in Colour Balance and then further levels adjustment.


Picture will be removed if you are offended by my take on your pic.

The colouring down the singers right arm is not CA but light from the a side light. Loss of detail in right arm and chest could be painted back in.

That looks great chris, much better! I'm not too great with PP, and just know the basics. And they're pretty noisy, so i don't even want to sharpen them...?

I made the mistake of using aperture priority on my first 2 shoots. I don't know bloody why...! I just couldn't think, and got nervous...Next time i'll be in Manual so i can make quick changes.

I think you should crank up the ISO, crank the shutter and expose them more, just convert the really noisy ones to B&W - then noise just looks like grain

Thanks mate. Yeah I'm not happy with these now. I didn't take the time to process them and experiment, and i also got settings wrong when shooting!

Also, what is the best White Balance setting for typical band lighting?

I'll generally use tunsgten though, even when I'm using flash. RFemember that, when I'm usuing flash, it's significantly dialled down, so it's not going to be the primary light source ....

Which, btw, will be the answer to your question: the primary light source is the determinand for the wb setting that you should be using.

Yeah i shoot RAW and use Auto WB which comes out at about 4800k. I found by taking it back to about 2500k in PP, it looks much more normal and not all red. I would like to get it right when shot though..
