I can’t make up my mind as to which image I prefer - with grain or soft!!
I’m sure that there will be constructive comment for me to dwell on

Chris - you might want to run a Poll.
I prefer the second - 'Soft'.

Grain for mine... and I agree, the second is too soft. Nice image(s) though!

Wonderful texture in the grain shot, it has more appeal for me.

Hi Chris,
The one thing that we most often look for in an image is sharpness, it is a fact of life... our eyes want to see something of detail simply so they know they are focused properly on the subject. (This is something that I have considered often, simply because I have shot a lot of grainy film in my time, usually Kodak TMax 3200, usually rated at 2000). Grain provides us with something for our eyes to focus on... while we can see it we are happy even if the image is overall rather soft.
Try this for an idea... duplicat an layer, apply a little gaussion blur (just a few pixels) and see if you like it soft... then add back in some monochromatic noise just to add a little texture to the image. See what you think of the image then!
Hope this is a help... Ants

Grain for me too - if I have to choose. I'd like the grain a tad toned down, though, to make it look more natural/film like/old.
The softened version looks way too high-tech and doesn't suit the subject and colour.
Cheers
Steffen.
