A daytrip from Adelaide

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Whilst in Adelaide for my Brother's birthday, we went on a day trip to the Barossa Valley and Adelaide hills. Here are a few from the day that I liked. Hope you do too.

Any tips of retaining the detail in the black feathers?

When you resize the images often lose a little quality including sharpness...I tend to sharpen once and then maybe reduce the opacity nearly everytime I resize something for the web...

Love the reflections in the second shot...its very well seen and caught!

You could use a little fill flash to retain some details in the black feathers...but make sure you underexpose the shot to keep detail in the background and the fill flash should only really be enough to brighten the bird...:)
The last thing I want to do is hurt you... but it's still on the list... ;)

i like the first of these russell....with the magpie did you loose the detail in pp....i took a photo of a willy wag tail recently using these settings....manual...aperture f8...exposure time 1/125...i didn't post because the tail isn't visible...hope you dont mind i'll put it here for you to look at.

Thanks Bindii. I noticed the reflection and thought mmm cool photo. I took this one, and then stepped back a few steps to get a wider shot, and a little breeze picked up and the reflection disappeared in a flash.

Bindii and Pa, thanks for the tips with the magpie. I will try a bit of fill flash next time. Pa I do not mind you putting a photo up. It looks pretty sharp, and can def see the detail in your feathers. I think my photo may have been slightly underexposed, and I was in shade, and so was the magpie. Looking at the photo up close there is a little detail in the feathers. Something to work on for next time though.

I was pretty happy with the shot, cause his eyes (and beak) are pretty sharp. The extra detail in the feathers would have been a bonus.
