Puffins were on my "must shoot" list for our trip. Finally got this one in Glacier Bay, and I am pretty happy with it, considering how little and fast the buggers are.

Pretty overcast and dark as you can see, so I bumped up the ISO so I could keep a fast shutter speed.

ISO800, 1/2500, f/5.6.

D200, 70-200 @ 200mm with 1.7 TC

That's a shot not often seen. You did well under what looks like pretty disastrous conditions Des. I like it a lot.
Did you get any more of them? They're such cute and colourful little buggers.

We only saw puffins this one time unfortunately, but I did get another couple of good shots. Interesting watching them trying to take off, they pretty much just run on the water and flap like hell :)

(I didn't even know puffins could fly!! :D ). The running take-off shot is really cool!

Thanks for the comments guys. As mentioned, the puffins were a sight that I was determined to see on our trip. So getting the chance to get a couple of clear shots, let alone a sharp shot of one in flight, was a real thrill for me :)

The inflight shot and the take off are great, love the "foot prints" left on the water from the puffin trying to take off.

Puffins are one of my favourite birds. Well done with the PIF (puffin in flight) shot. It is a pity the weather and so lighting wasn't a bit more favourable.

I have seen them "flying" underwater in the Central Park Zoo (NYC). Amazing birds - northern hemisphere penguins.

Cheers guys. ATJ, I suppose my one consolation about the weather conditions is that at least it wasn't TOO sunny. The light was at least flat, with no glare at all coming off the water.
