Here's an image that I've made, and I invite you to offer your critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness may be tolerated.



It was a cold morning, but clear skies and long exposures make it a peaceful scene.

This is stunning! What a great shot.
The only thing I can think of is maybe crop out some of the sky some more? But thats just me, it looks excellent the way you have captured it!

Beautiful shot! Went straight through to the larger image, and that's great too. Really nice depth of light and dark colours. Only 'criticism' (if it could be called that!) - it doesn't look particularly 'cold'! Given it's titled 'Perth Dawn', I have no trouble believing it's a sunrise after yet another warm evening and overnight

did you use a bit of flash to bring out the pilons in the front?

Also the only slight crit (smallest amount) is the blown line of lights.

Thanks for the suggestion Muzza, scrolling the page down and watching the top of the image (the empty sky) disappear seems to work, it looks good like that too (since I guess the empty space isn't really adding much). But cropping the top, I'll miss the fade to the dark blue again but again, it's not adding much to the foreground, so it could be chopped - then I can't decide which version I like more Thanks Muzza

Yes, this was near UWA, along Mounts Bay Road, near the Old Swan Brewery, and yes, this is a single image

Thanks BT*ist I felt very cold while taking this, and was hoping you'd feel it a little too Perhaps it's a feeling only I can link to the image - as looking at it also reminds me of when I was out there taking it... feeling cold (and wearing 4 layers!). Being Winter, the evenings and nights (and dawns) have been quite cold here. Maybe I should take the photographs to make people feel warm inside

Thanks Poompy. I didn't use any flash in this photograph - the pilons were lit by a light on the building (the Old Swan Brewery) nearby (I think lighting the path path and river-wall). I think it was a new light as it wasn't there last year I brought my spotlight to "paint", but conveniently there was light this time The blown line of lights - over the Narrows Bridge? At first I didn't like blowing it out (though being brighter than most of the scene it was expected), and now when I look at it, it's like "Perth's big fluorescent tube" I could take another exposure of it, like HDR or blending, so that the bridge won't blow, but I'll have that feeling inside that I'm cheating (though it's probably not!)

a few suggestions for the next time you take this shot

1. the bridge is a little to hot and draws your attention away from the rest of the shot (every time I go looking for the details my eye is drawn back to the bridge too quickly)

2. I find the star pattens from the lights don't really suit this type of shot

as for suggestions (noting your 30sec f14 ISO 100)

come back to f8 and adjust shutter for same exposure to fix up the staring a bit
then speed up the shutter a little to bring the bridge under control... now you will have to wait a while till the background ambient light comes up to give you the overall look you have here (which is great by the way )

I will definitely keep these in mind for next time - especially to avoid the starring. So for the blowing up of the bridge, is to wait for the right timing so that the brightness difference is not too great - THANKS

Thats a breathtaking shot for me.
The glow seems to come from the city and I love the way it expands up and down the photo. It seems to be coming from the bridge itself rather than a distant sunrise. The effect is magic!

i cant say i find anything t be wrong with this image, the interest in the foreground created by those pylons is great!
