Macro photography using the 70-200VR

Hi,

My recent attempt at outdoor macro photography. These were all taken hand-held using my Frankenstein combo of a Nikkor 70-200VR + Canon 500D close-up filter  . This combo gets me approx 1 : 0.8 magnification.

In hindsight, a tripod and something to block subjects from the wind would have been very useful. I should have also used a smaller aperture to increase DOF on most of them (I was shooting mostly f/8 to f/11). Comments?

The Bee shot is awesome and in my opinon the best of the bunch, I like the last but think that different lighting would of helped bring the shot out.

A tripod is a must in macro (and don't forget to turn the VR off when on the tripod).

Nice bee!

Yeah, one of those things that I *should* have thought about before heading out. I was out covering the City-to-Surf, and had some spare time to kill afterwards so I wandered down to the Botanical Gardens for some shots.

I guess that's one of the good things about a close-up filter vs a macro lens. It doesn't take up much space so I have it in my bag all the time ready to capture anything interesting that may come up in an otherwise non-macro shoot.

Still experimenting with exposure and lighting for macros, so thanks for the comments!
