Hi

Well, Patrick posts alot of shots of me so I thought it was time for some of him and Alex to be shared. Credit to Pat for the lighting setup. As soon as I am less time poor I plan to share more.

C&C welcome. I think these are a little flat/grainy and slightly under. happy with the composition and expressions though.

And all this posted using only my left hand with baby in the other!

Cheers
Alicia

......Here are the larger images Geoff. :) I'll have a play with the curves and see if it improves....I think Pat mentioned curves might help.

Alicia you've done well to do this all left handed!

I would like to see these a bit bigger but as you say, they are a little under exposed. Perhaps some curve adjustments may brighten them somewhat?

Beautiful poses none the less. Good work!

great photos! The first and second shots are great. The third and fourth kinda creepy even though I know Patrick is playing with Alex...actually Alex's expression in the last pic is a classic. Trying to figure out who this odd man is :)

I had to have a look at this thread, being called Patrick and having a son called Alex myself.

Great shots, I love the look on Alex' face in the first one.

Great shots Alicia. My pick is the 2nd. They are all family treasures I'm sure.

Well done..and using only one hand as well. Just another multi-tasking role. :D

Cheers, Mick :) :) :)

hmm, #2 makes me think of Ghostbusters 2, with that evil Vigo guy wanting the baby for him to inhabit so he can rule the world ...

but I think the eye contact that Pat & Alex are sharing, plus the smiles in #3 is just great, a really sentimental, bonding moment.

Subject aside - all of these shots have ”non-focussed” lighting making them fairly flat. The white shirt is a no-no as it dominates the ”visual” aspect of the whole scene.

Chris, the lighting set up was main light (diffused) at camera left, c45 degrees to lens axis, hairlight at camera right, c135 degrees to lens axis (horizontal) and above subject height. SB800 on camera bounced off ceiling but mainly used to trigger other lights.

Do you think that the main light with brollie reflector would have given more focused light?

We didn't have any fill on camera right in front of subject, unfortunately.

I know these are Alicia's shots, but I am keen to learn alternative and prospectively better lighting set ups. :D

All lighting is subjective Patrick but an example would be:

Key light - virtually face on to subject(s) with a reflector to the right of subject(s) to take some key light into the right hand side. The hair light would be behind the subject(s) in line with the right hand side of the subject(s). You could use a background light behind the subject(s) pointing towards the background - this would, with the hair light, give some definition.

Once this is all setup you would have to experiment with the amount of light that is being ”thrown” by distancing the lights.

But in the end, it’s what you, the photographer feels that they have accomplished and my critique is only my personal viewpoint.

Lovely shots. :)

I would try for some more separation between your subjects and the background. A hair light, as Chris is saying, would be good.
