Light painting in KNP

I spent last week at Perisher. Pulled myself out of bed at ~4.30am one morning, strapped on the snow shoes and went exploring, hoping for a great sunrise. While I was crunching away on the ice (-5 degrees that morning ) I saw a huge bank of clouds rolling in, and knew that sunrise shots were out of the question. Given limited time, I crunched over to these fantastic rock formations at North Perisher.

Unfortunately I don't have a remote for the D200, since Nikon in their infinite wisdom decided to make the brilliant $30 wireless D70 remote incompatible with the better camera . Hence I was limited to 30 second exposures, pushing up the ISO as needed. Light painting was done with a tiny LED torch (thanks Glen! :D) . C&C appreciated :)

I like the affect, shame about the noise (but you've explained why the ISO bump was necessary.

very nice ....... I would be happy with that result....... you will find that if there is some noise when viewing on screen, I doubt that it will be on a enlargement........

I think this has a great ethereal quality. The noise is a minor distraction, but I don't think it destroys the shot. The other elements are great - you've got the inky blue sky with a splash of stars and the contrasting colour from the rising sun and compositionally you've a nice strong foreground to draw the eye to the rocks. A keeper.

To me the noise is not an issue. I think it is such a good image as it stands. The Orion constellation and other stars really make this a stand-out image. Great work.

Thanks for the comments :)

The noise doesn't bother me at all, as I know it won't show up in print.
