Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

a bloody long exposure and by the looks of it a wide aperture aswell i'd imagine. although, cant have been too long cos there's no star trails.

most importantly a creative eye and perfect execution.

Almost looks 3d with the stars in the background. Great sense of depth and very well captured!

After reading these comments, I am walking round with a massive smile on my face :D Thanks one and all! :D To receive such high praise from such skilled people really does mean a lot.

I think I will take Sue's suggestion and maybe crop a little off the bottom though. After that, I'll hopefully get it printed.

A few people asked how it was done - it was a pretty basic setup, but it worked out pretty well :)

Tripod, with the D50 and Sigma 10-20 attached. Tried to compose the scene, but it was mostly guesswork, being so dark. Set the body to manual focus, and just set the lens to infinite.

Set the camera to manual...lens wide open at F4, and then just quite a few different shutter lengths. The D50 only goes up to 30 seconds though, so they were Bulb captures...that was the hard bit.

I don't have a remote or a cable release or anything like that...so I'd press the shutter release button, stand bloody still, and then let the button go after what seemed like a good amount of time, all the time holding my finger on the release.

The camera did its noise reduction thing for a while...and then I'd do the next one, with each one longer than the last, just to see the differences.

The RAW file was worked on a bit in CS2 to bring out the detail and colour a bit, and that's about it.
