Hi Adelaidians & Big cat lovers
was at the zoo today and noticed the male lion is now in the two large enclosures with the females in the small one - he is looking much better weight wise - still no confirmation of when they will be in together
Certainly not a good photo (still playing with all the Manual settings) but you'll get the idea

Hi Deb,

I like both of those shots. The Lion is pretty sharp and all in focus. He is almost looking at you.

Good shot of the flamingo, and nice reflection under it.

First is a good shot. Nice and sharp. He is looking rather thin.

The flamingo shot is great. I'd be inclined to clone out those feathers on the water.

Nice photos, I am going to have to head into the zoo for photography reasons, last time I was with my 3 young neices, so keeping them in control was more important than photos.

I once did a behind the scenes tour around the zoo and they said the Flamingo is blind and that might be why its eyes were closed. Supposedly it is very old and despite it being blind it can get around the enclosure because it knows its way around - so until it dies they expect it to live only about another 5-10 years it will remain where it is.

After reading your thread very early this morning, I headed for the Zoo at opening time. Unfortunately the young male Lion was back in his old enclosure and the girls were in theirs Also all parties were asleep for the greater part of the morning

When I was at the enclosure with the female Sumatran lying on the elevated flat rock, the old male next door decided to go for a swim in the pool for about 5 minute. By the time it took me to get there he was out and licking himself Not a great day all round, except for the news, a four Sumatran will be arriving soon, and they are then going to encourage all of them to swim in the pool

We need to make friends with the lion keeper to keep up with the rearrangements .

Asho - thanks for your feedback on the flamingos! This is a shot of the young one - she has much more colour and really just had her eyes closed for the shot. Have a look at my earlier post 'flamingo' and you will be able to see just how pale the old girl (88) really is in comparison.
I try and get to the zoo once every couple of weeks so let me know if you want ot catch up

Ahh missed that earlier flamingo one - it normally wouldn't have caught my attention, but this one did because it had Adelaide Zoo in the forum title. I would let you know on here when I am going, but it will more than likely end up being a last minute decision ie wake up one Saturday morning in the mood, and I'll just go. And it wont be for a few weeks that I go, Saturday's are busy for a few weeks and Sunday's are pretty full all the time mostly. Gee looking at my calendar maybe 3rd or 10th November - I might have to take a day off work and head in their - I reckon I am owed a few days in lieu.

while Fozzie is THE big cat man I have learnt from him in the past that there are three currently at the zoo , a young male (waiting for the old guy to move on) is currently not on display. So a fourth is really exciting - a breeding female would be great but Fozzie may know more.

Asho - Sat 3rd's OK (might work as a mini meet)
but the 10th is the Christmas Pagent and I'll be there with my son (and camera)

Well I cant really commit to anything, like I said it all depends on how I feel when I get up, I often have to work late on Friday night, and if that is the case I am usually a wreck come Saturday morning. Pagent doesn't really interest me, it might be the best option to go then, because there will be less people there I reckon

Deb, nice shot of the lion - what a huge difference light makes, that cage is so much easier to get good light in.

Daniel,the young male tiger is brought out at night - although on some occasions they bring him out at aaround 4.00 pm on a Sunday afternoon for something different. During the day he is normally out the back in the night cages.

My understanding is that a younger female is in the pipeline. The present non breeding female (hand reared). Kamerie is 12 years old.
