shooting backstage with my 85mm at f1.4 in available light

for backstage work i'm always trying to simplify the way i take pictures so scoping out the nice light in any situation is one of my top priorities, instead of relying on the flash

Image

instead of using a reflector tucked under the chin to fill light, i move the model to a makeup table where he light arranged around the mirror acts like a square flash, even lighting all around
Image

this one is side lit from the light from a makeup table
i also blured this more in photoshop for added effect

and this is why I know nothing about photography...

If this was shot at 1.4 how did you manage to keep the models face all in focus? When I shot at 1.4 it is such a shallow depth of field that I can't fill the frame like this.

hi

depth of field is relative to distance
im at 85mm liek 105mm on a d2x

im far away from the model further you are away depth of field increases

and these are small images too

the original file shows much more shallow blur just outside the focused area

nice shots wendell
I like the last one (she is cute) but there is a shadow or something in the corner of her right eye that is distracting and the whites of her eyes could be just that... a little more white

Nice use of the light Wendel. Light is everything in photography and you are sensitive to the 4 main elements....direction, intensity, colour and quality. I'm amazed at how quickly you have learnt to see and then exploit those characteristics...it takes most many many years.

Nicely done, Wendell. The lighting is great in all the images! I like the last in the series the most.
