I will be using my new 85mm f1.4 instead of my 70-200VR from now  It is much lighter and faster too. I had a great work out with it on the weekend.

the first one isn't particularly sharp, what is the shutter speed?

I have to get back to you on the shutter speed

You'd have to see a full size version and know the aperture to really judge sharpness, if you've shot this at F1.4 under 1/100sec and you're close the results are pretty good.

Its tricky to use, I find my 85L @ F1.2 is VERY difficult to use wide open and nail the focus. Stopping down helps alot...

Either way, the 85 F1.4 and 85L from Canon are fine lenses and you'll really love it the more you use it.

#1 looks pretty sharp to me in that size. There's no need to go absolutely tack sharp in wedding portraits I think.

Interesting observation.

On the Nikon, I find the 50mm f/1.4 to also be very difficult to use, especially wide open, and nail the focus, but with the 85mm f/1.4 I have no such issues ... and the 85 is just such a joy to use at any aperture.

Interesting.

The 50 would be easier wouldn't it , the wider the lens the more DoF?

F1.2 even with loads of light Ive had hit and miss type results. But maybe I'm being too critical. I actually dont shoot alot at F1.2, mostly at F1.8 , usually provides plenty of light....

As I'm sure you know, it also depends how far the tog is away from the camera as well. An 85mm lens appears to be sharper as one tends to stand further back so more things on the face/body will be in focus.

One would think so, which is why I find this of interest.

I'd perhaps be thinking in terms of something to do with minimum focus distance - the 50 is closer, of course - but I have few problems getting up close and personal with the 85 (shut up in the peanut gallery :) ) so that's not seeming (to me) to be the answer.

I think it's a matter of calibration.

Of the user. :)

Perhaps! I've had good results with a 50 f1.4, and with the 85 1.2. Its not the 85 1.2 is bad, its not, its stellar IN the right hands :P

I really just need more practice...

35L is alot easier to use, again because its wider

I'm impressed by the lack of noise in these at the higher iso.

No.1 seems sharp to me, jsut the out of focus part is a little distracting.

This lens is on my want to own, probably never will list.

I second that, it is such a wonderful lens, doesnt leave any of my bodies and its always with me. Simply best lens for its class and performance :D
