From the same shoot I did last weekend.... we tried a few different things and as you can see they didn't all work out which is rather annoying but then I guess thats how we learn...

I would be interested to hear your opinions on some of these shots though... suggestions on improving them for next time would also be appreciated...

oh I kinda wanted a modern/funky kinda look to some of these ones.. and yeah I know I haven't nailed them... but I aint giving up!

wow, very nice work, as said in another thread, the rapport you two have is working well, and shining!

first one is very sharp, I think my eyes get caught on the different color temperature, between your flash, and the sun on the sand, perhaps add a warming gel to your flash (think the tunsten that comes with say a SB800 might do the trick). really like the pose, perhaps shooting a little wider for a bit of seperation would work well too.

second one is another beautiful capture. I like that style of shot, nice personal portrait. holding L's up the to image, maybe crop from left, eyes in left third? the other thing I notice (because I love taking these shots) is the horizon line. it is always a very strong leading line, and even though it leads nicely to her eyes, it cuts through middle of her head. perhaps get lower, or pose on a mound to get lower than her. is there birds in flight, or do you have a bit of dust to clean?

third, like the overall idea. perhaps consider edit that paint on the ground. and the strong shadows behind her legs are too strong. something dreary about the lighting, but can quiet explain... I certainly cannot get a portable flash anywhere near yours, so well done! because I know she is 16, I dont like the stubbie (even if it is ginger beer). I think she is more suited to a "coke" add style.

forth, I like the idea. good shutter speed! think the sun was too strong for your flash to compete, but again, this is a challenge for me too. that meter box thingo is a little distracting to the image too, but perhaps you were constrained to use that corner. very dark eye sockets, maybe you can dodge the shaddows a little? perhaps same, shoot a little wider for some seperation to background.

Like these a lot Bindii - first is may favourite. Can't comment technically, but, compositionally, I would have preferred to have seen the Amanda's right elbow in the second shot.

i like the narrative quality but i think you need more seperation of subject from background especially in the booth shot

shes a gorgeous girl, and i think you should shoot her more in available light her facing the sun or the sun hitting her from the side her bone structure is strong enough to take it

Really nice stuff Bindi.

Couple of nit picky things - her hair. Understand that it was at a beach (this is why I dislike taking portraits at a beach) but she looks a bit scraggly from the loose strands of hair.

Another thing you might want to try and do is soften the lighting from the flash as it's creating harsh shadows on her. Something you might want to consider getting is a reflector (gold/silver/white) to reflect the light instead of using a flash. You'll probably need to bring someone else along to hold the reflector for you but it creates a nice soft light.
