Hi...I'm still in the process of learning. I've been getting mixed reviews on this particular photo, so I wondering if you guys can help me with specific critiques?

MUCH appreciated.

It is a very nice photo to start with, but what do you want the viewer to see? I guess it is the subject so I would crop it as much as I can and would adjust the composition accordingly. Please remember that in photography “taste is in the eye of the beholder”.

Also, you can help us by limiting the size of your pictures to a maximum of 800 pixels either side and 150kb in size or less. I believe these are the rules for many people have old equipment and Internet connexion and have difficulties in seeing big files.

Thanks. I've reduced the size of the image...hope it's ok.

I've tried cropping to make it tighter, but now worried that I've cut off a bit too much?

That’s just right - the crop has turned isolation into a wonderful candid :)

Sue,

Very nice, and I agree that the original could do woth some cropping, but I think a different crop might be nice.

Where you've cropped to on the bottom is perfect. Leave the top pretty much alone (as per the original) but now crop a little from each of the sides, but you want to keep the whole of the child, and the whole of the set in the frame.

Also, was this on a hill, or is the horizon not straight? The trees in the background do not look straight suggesting to me the latter. ;)

i reckon it need cropping but also the angle is sort of in between .... not straight or arty but could be just a mistake.

you could make it straight

or make it an angle on purpose

I agree with Gary. I also prefer the cropped version to the one above. You are doing well!

Everyone has an opinion. I preferred the original image because it places the child into a space. It creates a sense of exploration and learning. The child looks slightly more vulnerable. As you can see....there is no right or wrong and different folk will have different views. Now...which is your favourite view?

i like the cropped version.

now i think it will depend now on if you were going to hang it, which type of crop would work on the wall. if you went into portrait mode i'd keep the foreground and crop the top. in landscape your first crop looks great.

Truly appreciate the feedback, guys. Yeah, the photo was taken on a hill, but not quite as steep as the shot suggests.

While I do like the crop because it's more intimate and features the child more, I agree with Matt that I like the "sense of wonder" and exploration in the original.

Well...the learning continues. :) [At least the parents were happy with both shots!]
