I just plain can't decide which of these two I like better. I'd appreciate your comments (even if you hate both ). Click an image to see a larger version.

The colour Stubsy, definetly the colour one.

Peter - as I have just remarked in the other thread the butterfly in colour for sure

I would say the colour one is more interesting... especially after you've gone to the trouble of softening the edges.

in the BW it just looks like white smoke around the butterfly but in the colour one the effect (of softer edges) is more prominent.

Newbie question: Did you just use saturation to make it whiter on the edges?

Just need to know the technical term instead of having to say 'softer edges all the time'

I vote for black and white.
I think it's more interesting to look at.

The effect is called vignetting. This can be a bad thing if your lens does it (usually dark in the corners) or artistic if you do it

I used Nik Color Efex (a PS plugin) to do this and I also softened the image slightly to give it a more dreamy look.

Ah, the most photographed butterfly in NSW.

I think it works in both colour and B&W.

If i see just B&W i like it but wonder what it looked like in colour, then i see the colour image and decide that it looks fine in B&W. It's the old question of B&W images, 'What did it look like in colour', only to find that the photographer made the right decision in making an image B&W as it is not that colourful and has enough dark and light contrast to make a good B&W shot.

I vote for colour - I didn't even notice the butterfly in the black & white one! Then again, you know I'm blind eh!

The colour version does it for me.

My vote is for colour,

I liked b&w but spent most time trying to work out what the bunch of dead flowers to the left of the butterfly was.

I like the soft, dreamy colours.

I like the black and white because I believe it gives it a magical air whilst in the colour it is more obvious that the flowers are a bit weedy and dying. Although I like the idea of the vignette I must say I find it a little strong here and think it might even distract attention from the simplicity of the subject - only in my opinion of course

Colour for me - I got distracted on the B&W image by the flowers.

100% COLOUR dad bless his soul chucked out the AWA b/w TV in the early 70 "s along with the Box brownie we have had colour in our lives ever since.
personally I find B/W disturbing and morbid . After surviving the 60's and 70's you can colour my world with colour and sunshine every day.
