the R1 and the d300 have cut my PP time down by i reckon around 90%. everything just works the way i want it to.
the live view, the 51 points, the metering plus the R1's light flexibility and complete control...everything. these are just framed and resized. yes i know the dof is razor thin...thats the way i like it.

Rooz they are all absolutely brilliant The last in particular you have really combined that shallow DOF with your compositional skills to produce a real winner. Hell #2 also

IMHO #1 and #2 are just wonderful - outstanding colour rendition especially. #2 is one of the best spider pictures I've ever seen. Congratulations!

the spider shot is one of my favourites. its just a bummer i missed the focus point though. you can see his eyes aren;t totally crisp. not sure if i misfocussed a little or his head just moved at the wrong time or what. it bugs the crap outta me the more i look at it actually. lol

RE: lighting for that pic. sbr1 on camera directed at subject. sbr2 on camera and aimed behind subject, (over his head), to try and get some contrast in the tone of the pink. imo that "light and shade" of the colour makes it work. (the strong colour also distracts people from the misfocussed eyes lol)

Okay, I'm going against the grain here. I'd think the DOF in #1 is too shallow and agree with you that #2's focus is just off.

# 3 is my fav here as I love the idea, the composition and the colours. I only wish there was more DOF.

Sorry but JMHO.

The spider shot is the best of the series for me and it is becuae of the colours, slightly better focus and the way the leaf contour compliments the contour made by the eyes. I personally would like to have seen a bit more depth of filed and focus in th eother two but that is just me. Lovely colours overall though..

Two is an excellent concept. I would also like to see just a touch more in focus just forward enough to catch the other two legs.
It is a great set of colour though.

pls, no need to be sorry. everyone has their own opinion on what they like/ don't like/ prefer. personally i shoot at very wide apertures becasue i prefer the effect. every now and then i'll shoot to get the image sharp at around f8 but almost never shoot past f11. my experience with this forum is that most members here are not big on that idea which is cool. most people here prefer small apertures, (especially for macros), and most of the frame in focus. there's no right or wrong, just preference.  btw: when i say i didn't nail he focus in the spider shot, i meant that it was probably user error. i like the dof the way it is but i miscued and i didn;t get it dead right. when you work with macro lens', extension tubes and large apertures there is a very fine line.

Stunning colours

Some lovely colors there and really cool macro shots

Lovely images and beautiful colours, but at least one third of the portrait pictures appear cut off. I experienced the same effect with an image I posted yesterday till I reduce the width to 600px. I don't think this website can accept the 800px width.
This is perplexing! I just saw the beautiful falcon images in their full width of 800px and yet no cropping happens with them???
