Have had the opportunity to use a studio a bit of late and though it was about time i posted some shots from in there for comment. Lighting setup is 2x soft boxes. I'm actually quite interested to hear what people think of these as it's my first time in the studio without any prior experience in studio photography.

Hi Adam,
For your first time in a studio I think you have done exceptionally well.
Who's studio? Your own setup or a friend/hired?

#1 - Catchlight in your little girls eyes is great, it's a sharp, well 'posed' image...

#2 - Interesting angle and good eye contact, not a lot to critique after that really. Anything you don't like about it or thought you could do better?

#3 - Another great eye contact shot, how much PP did you do to this and how much sharpening?

Tell us a little bit more about your lights and setup too if u want

The studio is owned by a local paper who i give a few images here and there, in exchange the studio is pretty much mine whenever i want.

I'm very happy with the 1st, only pp done to this image was a little dodging to bring out the brown in her eyes and a resize.
The only nitpick i have with the 2nd is that her shorts are distracting and the bit of the fringe over the Left eye could have been lifted a touch,
With the 3rd there was very little pp done, slight levels adjustment to brighten the image a tiny bit, and my standard resize and sharpen, but, i do think my std sharpen amount is a bit much for these shots as they're already very sharp being shot with either my 50mm 1.4 or 105 2.8 macro.

The light setup is pretty much brand new hardly been used, has 3 flash heads 2x 30 inch(or so) soft boxes and the 3rd light has a bard door setup. They have roll paper backdrops in black or white and plenty of fabric etc for props.

Don't think i've missed anything

Very nice pictures, I like them all, very sharp, especially number #3, very cute little girl...

If you don't mind, what 's the brand of the flash heads are you using and may I know how many watt is it?
I'm thinking to buy some lighting and set up a mini studio for taking picture of my children. I have no idea how many watt is enough to take a photo like yours.

Sintia, I'm unsure of the brand and wattage (I'll have a look when I'm in there next) but any basic studio lighting kit should fill the requirements for some nice images of your children there are even some avaliable through the bargins section of this website.

But, last week by joining "pro for a day" in melbourne, help me so much, and get some idea, but at that time the lighting was the proper ones I guess, and big size studio...

The best value for money portrait upgrade i bought was my 50mm prime lens... you can get the f1.8 versions of canon or Nikon for little outlay and the image sharpness is fantastic. Try using natural light through a window or maybe using a reflector when taking some setup shots of your kids. You will be surprised with the results you can achieve.

How cute does Emily look!!! Bet Lisa loves that one. Great lighting. Second shot is good too, she will be happy with that result. Good use of prop on the third but as a small nit pick, clone out the 2 spots on her left foot as they draw the eye away from her face.

cute kids, very nice. you are very lucky to have the lights handy too. I'm looking forward to my little one getting a bit bigger, like sitting up & stuff like that. I'm getting a bit bored with the asleep pics.

That third one is gorgeous!!! I do hope that you are framing it... (and the second one too!)...

Why is the face of the 3rd picture so pink? I would reduce the pinkness in the model's face, she is too pink for my liking. I prefer the other two images although I find the second a bit on the provocative side. Apart from these points, and this is a matter of taste, I believe there are very nice pictures.

Thank you all for taking the time to look at my images, now i need to find some new models to work with, I have found in completing these shoots that the studio makes me think a lot more about my images, lighting, composition etc, and i think given the opportunity anyone here should give it a go. I feel that the deeper analysis of my shots before hand is flowing on to the rest of my photography.
