Cute! I like the first and the last. I would prefer to see the dog in focus instead of the lead in the third.

Still coming to terms with the AF on the D300. Was using single AF with no tracking.
I thought that with this setting it might acquire AF quicker, but it appears not, still experimenting

I'm not sure if it is the sharpening or jpeg artifacts but there face looks sort of artificial. I'm not sure if I'm describing myself adequately.

You should definitely be using AF-C for these sorts of shots and perhaps even the 3D tracking. There's an online tutorial somewhere which gives examples of when you should use each focus mode.

I am using AF-C , but have read many reviews on the AF with the D300 where it appears that 3D tracking with single point AF(not mode) is best.
So I'm still experimenting.
I have also recalibrated ALL my lenses with AF fine tune feature on the D300
