Built by Convicts

This is what remains of the guardhouse built by convict labour from Port Arthur at the first coal mine in Tasmania. It supported both the penal colony at Port Arthur and also the small community at Hobart, in the very early days of settlement. The coal was of poor quality and the mine was abandoned due to 'wanton debauchery and buggery.'
Only the worst of the bad convicts from Port Arthur worked at the mine. It was punishment for crimes committed at the penal colony, such was the poor state of the mine. The guards and convicts alike called the mine a true representation of 'Hell.'
The mine is on the Tasman Peninsula.
