ANDRA Winternationals - foolin' around

Went to the ANDRA Winternationals near Brisbane last weekend. Thought I’d have a go at some side flash. In the old film daze I use to have up to three flashes hooked up to my Pentax 6 x 7 (one on each side of the camera and one down track).

Now with digital age I thought I’d give my two Canon 580s a whirl – setting up the slave unit down track. My biggest problem was the fact other photogs would lean over the wall cutting off the line of site to the slave so I lost a heap of shots. Started off with the 300mm 2.8 on wide open at 1600 ASA. This one of Amanda Shepherd’s fuel car worked out OK


This pic of Aaron Deery in a alky car wasn’t as explosive without flames but I still thought I did reasonably well.



After a couple of hours of having the slave’s beam interrupted I moved closer to the startline with a shorter lens. This one is what I was hoping for but is a bit constrasty.



I love the color of this car and even though the wheels aren’t off the ground this looks pretty mean me thinks



This was one of the shots that the flash was interrupted but I don’t think it needs it. These are awesome cars to be but mere feet from.

I was wondering who was using the 580 perched on the wall!

Worked really well!

I just wish I could go up that high in the ISO though!

Really like this series, thanks for posting your thought process too. I think the flash worked well.

I know I'd be constantly worried and checking out the 580's to make sure they didn't walk off...!!

Na all the photogs at the event are really good. We all keep an eye out on each others gear. And the drivers, crew and officials are the only other ones to have access to the area so it is pretty safe. No general public allowed.

Looks like the driver is staring directly at your flash on the wall in the 2nd pic The 3rd shows the full extent of the flash from the side.

Is WSID worse for the number of photogs? I was actually expecting more at the Winternats than we actually got.

Some meetings at WSID can get busy Brett, I was pleasantly surprised with the number of photog's at the Winters, what helped was letting us go down as far as the 330 ft marker, really opened up the options as far as lens choice, before it was all 70-200 and every one wanted that sweet spot, a good move by Willowbank.
