Hi
Taken a couple of days ago with my 50mm 1.8 and a 4x close up filter. Pre focused, then switched to manual focus. lit the match and placed back to the distance I prefocused..taken with wireless trigger.
Probably bad technique but couldn't figure out how else to take it...without assistance.

1/80 sec f/1.8
comments?...ideas on technique?
Joe

To me the focus isn't quite there.
The way you describe, you AF focussed, switched to MF, then struck the match then put it back. It almost certainly didn't go back in EXACTLY the same spot.
Perhaps better would have been: Put the match in place, frame, MF focus, light the match from another (ie don't move the match you are shooting once you have framed and focussed), tap the button.
I think maybe a slightly faster shutter speed AND smaller aperture would help too (increase ISO & use NR in camera). The flame is a bit of a blob.

I agree with Mr Darcy's technique, sounds like it will give you better focus. But I love the picture anyway, maybe I am easy to impress.

Try sticking the match you want to photograph into a blob of plasticine/blutack. Get the focus and everything sorted under normal light, turn off the lights, strike a different match and touch it to the fixed match while hitting the tit at the same time. If you can, use multishot so you can fire off 3-5 fps (camera dependant) throughout the entire burn process. Should give sharper results. Cool picture anyways tho.
