Self Portraits

This is not my usual photographic work.

I am getting my hair cut tomorrow. It will be the first time in well over 2 years. I thought I would mark the occasion by taking a few shots of the long hair because it's going to be at least 2 years before it is that long again.

The shots were taken in the bathroom with the D300 and 60mm f/2.8 on the tripod with an SB-800 and Lambency flash diffuser pointing straight up. I also had an SB-24 connected by an SC-17/ES-9000 to the SB-800. (I did try using a slave, but the preflash kept setting it off. The SB-24 was to the right of the camera pointing towards the wall to provide side and back lighting. The camera was triggered with a Photix N1 from Poon.

Jeez Andrew, you’re the archetypical mountain man :D Is that why you live in the mountains?

I would cut it off in the summer, it will not be such a shock to the system with warm barmy air wafting its way across the nogin.

Like the pics BTW.

I forgot to mention my reasons for the hair cut:
1) I'm off on my annual dive trip in a couple of weeks and my hair was a real pain after each dive (and there are 20-22 dives in a week).
2) I have a work do on Friday and I have set a tradition for doing strange things with my hair. One time I shaved my beard off and half the people didn't recognise me.

Otherwise, I would have waited until Summer.

Nice mugs Andrew... Funny how photographers are the worst posers when it comes to self-portraits...

Just as well you have the copyright on those Andrew, the likes of No Idea and Famous cannot be trusted.

Don't you just love it though, when, having shaved off the beard and leaving a moustache, people come up to you and say "Oh, you've grown a moustache" ??

Nicely done; self portraits are always a difficult task. I usually find the subject of mine to be unapproachable.

How do you ever get a mask seal with that much fur on your face (vaseline?)?

Funny, I lost my beard about the same time I started diving seriously (and got short hair). One weekend of teaching was enough to make me lose the hair.

20-22 dives in a week, take it easy! Where are you off to?

Ant.

I have rarely had a problem with my beard, in fact I grew the beard in 1980 while on a dive trip (we were on a deserted island for 2 weeks and I couldn't shave) and it has only been removed 3 times since. All I need is for it to be sealed at the top and neither very short or very long hair causes a problem. One nice thing about the long hair was that I started wearing a hood (to keep the hair away) this makes it easier to get a good seal and also I can run my mask straps over my ears which also helps for a good seal.

Undersea Explorer. Leaves from Port Douglas and does the Ribbon Reefs and Osprey Reef. It will be my 6th trip with them.

For the few times I have shaved off my beard, I got "Have you had a haircut?".
