Yep, these small group trips don't come cheap, but as you say, they do take care of pretty well everything from start to finish, without being over-organised and still allowing a good deal of free time to ourselves. A good example of this was our trip to the Great Wall - instead of going to the section closest to Beijing which is overrun by tourists, we had a 3 hour bus ride to the see a more scenic and less visited section, even leaving at 11am so we could be on the wall to catch the late afternoon light (which we didn't get because of the mist). The 6 hours on the bus were well and truly worth it.
One of the best aspects of this trip was that even though it was a "photographic" tour, it really was first and foremost a journey through China that could be photographed, if you know what I mean. And because Jason and Ewen obviously know and appreciate the land and people so well, there was always the feeling that we were getting more than just a stock-standard tour.
