As part of the recent FE exercise I took a shot of the Glasshouse Mountains, but due to my fumbling I had a 'camera malfunction' with the FE and did not get my shot on film. Because it was a one shot only exercise I did not repeat the shot and I also prayed I had not broken the camera. But like any boy scout does, I went prepared, and took the d300 with me. After the said malfunction I unleashed the digital pixels and took the same shot, with bracketing, which I suppose makes it shots.

This is the result after some pp but Iam not sure what suits the shot best.

All taken with the 50mm 1.4.

B&W version, the jpeg compression tends to lose the detail in the stump and I would crop some from the foreground.



Colour 1 same as above but with minimal pp. 50th @ f11



Colour 2 Cropped and with some curves saturation etc. 100th @f11



Colour 3 Levels and a crop, not sure what other pp. 25th @ f11

Colour 3 works for me. Maybe the light; maybe the colours; maybe the white balance, but it works anyway.

colour 2 for me.

B&W for me.

I do like the image as it stands. It is an unusual and a different take on an often photographed vista, which i like.

Can I be a cop out and say they all are nice???

If pressed I would have to choose Colour 2

I think the colour works better than the b&w.

I'd prefer colour 2 though colour 1 may be more realistic. (Nearly confused the numbers).

I don't think the stump helps. I think crop it out or even clone it out for better balance.

I think the essence of the image is in the distant mountains. I'd even be tempted to crop the sky down, say to above the leaves on the tree, better even if you could have a tree that didn't go up out of the frame.

Alternatively, go back 20 to 50 yards to make the tree smaller and increase the impact and balance of the mountains. Of course that may not have been possible and there may have been other objects that would come into play.

Colour 2 except the stump needs more detail or it's a distraction.

I tend to agree that the second image seems to have more natural colour. On the other hand, the third image has a more appealing landscape format.

Thanks for the comments guys. I will try Murray's crop suggestions and may end up with a few different versions in crop, b&w and colour.

B&W for me, however, I would suggest crop some of the foreground. Ideally, get rid of the stump, however realising this may be difficult.

I like 'colour 2 cropped' maybe even a little bit more towards 'colour 3'.
the crop however I find to tight on the right hand side... it's just too close to the GHM.

I like the warm colours in the #colour 3.

I like colour2. It has that panoramic feel to it, well cropped. Also the colours provide it with the feeling that you're viewing a majestic vista - compare the mist and sky in 2 & 3 - it also feels more true to nature and you've simply captured what you saw.

The other photos are also good - and would be appropriate depending on what mood or feeling you want to convey.
