Yep, lowered the opacity of the layer to about 84% if I can correctly remember, had a phase were I did this to every conversion.

Nice expression and portrait Craig. I am still struggling to get any good expressions from people when I take their shots. In fact, most of the time I see their back as they run...

The only thing I wondered was the straight flash and the catch lights. I wonder what would happen if you move those catchlights slightly off to the side.

Kind of an off the wall question from a n00b here - but where do you find people that look like this? I see so many of these types of portraits where the subject's face tells an entire store in of itself - and that's what makes the photo interesting for me. I think of the recent post Hard Life http://dslrusers.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=37096 - same thing. Do you actually know these subjects? If not, how do you get them to pose, and how long does a shot take to setup? They don't strike me as models who are willing to sit around for all the fuss, diffusers, off camera flash setup etc - so I imagine you need to be in an out in a snap.

Oh well, just rambling now, I guess I'm curious what goes on behind the scenes.

All my local Timorese portraits are candid shots, most of them taken with 24-70 or 70 - 200 lense and SB800 with the cheap but so effective plastic defuser while walking through the streets of Mountain villages or small townships. I have to say that they are lovely people and most of them would take the time to stop and look at you. They did enjoy seeing themselfs on the camera screen and I did get some lovely smiles when they were looking at themself. I wish I could have given each one of them a print.
