in case you weren't already sick of seeing the little fella. he IS a cute little bugger though.

first time the WB on the d700 really struggled actually. sun was a killer, dipping in and out of clouds so the AWB was all over the shop. i dont recall this erratic behaviour with the d300, musta been one of those days.

yeah was a good day, shame the clouds broke away and that sun was a killer. i had quite the experience actually teaching a young man about camera etiquette. i ended up having to club him in the side of the head with my 300/4 but thats the only way some people learn.

i turned up to the bird show at about 1130 for a 1200 show. i stood way out the back standing up with another 2 photographers who also got there early. 2 mins before the show a bloke squeezes into my right. the sequence was as follows:

me: " can you please just be a bit careful mate cos i wanna get the hawk and i might be swinging this lens around a bit."
dickhead: "sure buddy, no problem"

the snowy come out, he steps in front of me and starts taking pics with his 18-200.

me: "mate, please, have some consideration...i asked you to pls be careful here."
DH: "sorry mate" (he sniggers something to his equally stupid mate next to him)

barn owl comes out, he does the same thing, steps in front of me. i tap him on the shoulder.

"mate, pls, i got here early for a reason, can you please either move or stay behind my lens."
"I'll only be a second."

he takes a couple more shots and then steps back whispering something else to his mate and they have a laugh. i look at the other photographer next to me, he shakes his head. hawk comes out...he does the exact same thing. i tap him on the shoulder...

"i'm not gonna ask you again buddy, pls dont stand in front of me."

he ignores me. i put my 300/4 on the monopod, take my eye off the VF, stand it up nice and straight, turn it to the left and then swing it round as hard as i could and it smacks him in the back of the head...HARD. his hat falls off and he stares back at me...

"you fuckin right there buddy !" he says

i put my camera down cos i'm ready to throttle this asshole: "i warned you buddy, now get the fuck out of the way."

then the real clincher comes, the other photographer standing on my other side has also had enuf and says to him...

"mate if you dont get the fuck out of here next time i'm gonna hit you with this." he points down at his 500/4L

the guy moves and i just about pee'd my pants laughing. Denis, (the other photographer with the 500L), and i have a coffee and debate which camera is better while having a pretty good laugh about things. he was a cool guy, we exchange numbers and next time either of us head to the zoo we promise to give eachother a call. i leave the zoo hapy to have seen the baby elephant, made a new friend, had a bit of a laugh and when it all wore off as i was driving home the one thing that stuck in my head from the whole eventful day was "i wish i had a bigger lens."

with the elephant shots i had about 40 shots and there looked on my screen to have about 5 different colour temperatures. none of them were right, so each one needed a tweak. not a big deal but annoying nonetheless cos i'm really not a fan of spending time in post. like i said, first time i've ever really experienced a WB issue on any of my camera bodies.

Hopefully I don't have any idiots there on Sunday - hoping to test out my "new" AF-S 300/2.8 Though with the size of that, I could probably dish out a bit of punishment myself!

thats sydney people for ya! step on their own grandmother to get in first! I had the same issues when i was there some time ago, I gave up trying to fight the crowds to get a good shot of the tigers

I like the rear end shot, something different, nice and sharp, i dont see any issue with the WB in the others, you have done well in post.
