I went out to Cockatoo Island last weekend with Craig (Alpha_7), a friend from the ACP and the lovely Anita for some fun shooting. A few I like at the moment, these are all shot RAW, imported into lightroom with Camera Standard profile and exported, bar the last in which I backed off the exposure just on her.


Natural light spilling in the window camera left, umbrella with SB800 gelled with a 1/2 (I think) CTO.


Umbrella above head height shooting down from the left and a second on the right, just above head hight.
EDIT: Replaced this with one slightly cropped and rotated as it was a tad crooked

A bit of an experiment... Sunlight blowing the background to heck, bare flash camera left held by my trusty VAL Craig.

I have one or two more to share that need some processing first, and some of Craig that I will post up as well.

I really like the cast umbrella shot (#2)

The first one is a standout for me dawsey... The expression on her face is great...

The first one is good, except the shadow on that eye looks
as she had a fight with the boyfriend and received a black
eye; otherwise it would be the best of the set. Perhaps you
could improving using one of the tools in your photo editor.
The second is also good, but I would remove the
visually distracting doorway and window and just have a
simpler wall background. You would need to lighten a bit
the part of the umbrella to make more prominent.
I like the third best of this set, however next time I
would ask the subject to fix her eyes on the lens, even if she
has her head slightly turned away. As it stands, looks as if she
just received the angel of the Lord or trying to memorise her
shopping list.
The last one, doesn't quite worked out for me because of
the blown out background and the haze it caused, perhaps
using a flash would have prevented this effect?

Thanks Colin, that actually came about after we shot another idea of mine and she started having some fun with it. The out-takes are great too

Thanks mate, she certainly has a great look, I just had to capture it. Though as Zafra52 pointed out there is an odd shadow on her eye that I just didn't notice before.


Zafra, I also agree about the door. I am yet to process these fully and as well as lightening that shodow, I will try to lose the door, or at least the window.
Funnily enough I don't have any similar to 3 with eye contact, but I like the looking away as well. I have others of her in a similar pose with eye contact.
The last was a random experiment, the blowing out and haze was intentional. I actually did use flash here to light her up so she wasn't completely lost. Even than I darkened her a little in LightRoom after the fact.

me too, however maybe tighten up the shot with a crop? that would remove the worry of lightening the brolly?

I also quite like #3, good expression with very natural makeup, do you have any others like this but with a different crop? would be interested in a shot with her centred..

its quite a hard style to nail imo, i have tried that on a couple of occasions and they have always turned out shite.. Wendell would be the man to comment here, regarding that style since I have seen some great shots of his using this tech...
