yeah ... the sun setting was great, flash filled it nicely ... flash is something im yet to comprehensively understand, mainly because i dont have a speedlite (i shoot mostly landscape or daytime sports.) but i took a couple of snaps and just moved close enough to get a nice smooth exposure ... flattering tones too (cloud WB.)
Well, so now I'm an art critic. 
It's quite artistic, IMO. Much of the lower frame leads you directly to the 2 people, specifically the 2 tire tracks on the left and the slope of the dune on the right. They are obviously a couple, but their separation and postures suggest that they're totally engrossed in the sunset, oblivious to one another. The only distraction is the mirror or whatever in the lower right corner. my gallery of so-so photos

nothing tricky mate, A mode F7.1 for sharpness, matrix metering, shutter limits to 1/60th in A mode (there's a reason for this, but i cant remember what it is.) ... metered off the sky then composed on my subjects (not that it probably mattered) and fired away ... i did keep them and the dark foreground in the picture somewhat so that at least 1 or 2 segments registered as dark.
I find i have trouble understanding the flash metering, i tend to just wing it more often than not with flash ... sometimes the behaviour of the camera had me a little confused. (plsu with things like locking AE i never know if im locking the bright background, or a dark foreground, likewise whether the flash will know to compensate for the bright background, or whether it will think "hey its bright as, flash only needs to be 10%) I need to sit down and figure it out ... but i do very little flash stuff except the odd flash fill or party photo, at which time the technique is unimportant as its not hard to "wing it". In other words, ive been havign too much fun shooting other things and havent delved into flash too much  ... might borrow a speedlite or my boss's old nikon flash and have a bit of a fiddle further
Im thinking however it pays to be in full manual mode when doing flash stuff, to avoid confused metering ... or just rely on the matrix. ... but even so, in full mannual, the camera still meters for the flash level, doesnt it?
I generally shoot my stuff in full manual anyway so I really don't know the difference...

Only with the flash mate ... and i get teh shot i want always, just sometimes im a tad confused over WHY it worked ... i dont shoot with flash much, usually prefer a tripod and 3 second exposure if its at night !

I guess sometimes I find my results with flash a little inconsistent, so therefore i get a bit confused about why / what works.
With the shot of jason and jess at sunset, i just locked everything, took a shot, reviewed quickly, took a step closer (going a tad wider on the zoom), another one, same again till i had it exactly how i liked it ... the first shot had the sky perfect but subjects dark so thats why i jsut went a bit closer to them ... its hard to get subjects to willingly stand there posing while you fart about and try different things ... so i jsut locked it, snapped, reviewed, step closer, snapped, reviewed, step closer, snapped ... winner. (while instructing them to stay and keep smiling ... i have a way with people hahahaha ... or the gun in my other hand.) "thats it baby work it work it, keep smiling , one more, thats it , great stuff" oh wait, that was the late saturday night photos ...
