The missus and I got to spend a couple of days in Tas-cold-mania, arriving back into Sydney this afternoon. Last night we were enjoying dinner at a restaurant in Devonport when the Spirit of Tasmania's horn blew. I left my chocolate and pecan pie, raced across the road, camera in hand, and in the pitch black captured the grand old ship leaving the harbour.

Amazing quality for grab shots. Fuji? I like the last shot best but haven't yet worked out why.

Fuji indeed. I could have tried iso 25,600 but I stopped at 12,800. The ship was moving fast.

I like the last one best with the composition. There's a tension in the shot because I'd usually expect the ship to be on the right, if it's sailing into the open sea. The way it's been composed though, it feels quite ominous as it's not about to sail into open space and waters. Reminds me a bit of the Titanic..

Thanks Piro. I'd never quite thought of it that way. Tension yes, but the composition comment is interesting. To be honest, the thing moves so quickly you have very little time to even think about composition. It's just getting things in focus in the pitch black night. However, upon reflection, the scene does give a sense of foreboding. Thankfully and to all accounts, it made it's way to Melbourne and all was well.

I agree on the last shot. It has more impact than the others and the black space to the right lends itself to advertising copy.

The subject is placed on the two thirds of the frame and the reflected light behind gives the impression the ships is moving away from the viewer in a dark night, that's why it works better that the other two. It is a great picture despite so much black.

I agree about the last shot. I think what works is that the balance of the reflection and the smoke trailing off into the dark tells me the ship is not going somewhere but it is 'leaving' somewhere.
