Night Sky

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Night Sky

I went away for a few nights and was staying in 'The Lost World Valley' approx 1 hour drive SW of where I live. Now while I live in a low populated area we do have some light pollution from the Gold Coast which affects the chances of 'good' night photography. The accommodation, a farm stay we booked into however was a little more remote, so no light pollution (when looking due west), we had clear skies and the moon rise was not until approx 10pm, all contributing to ideal conditions for a bit of night sky photography.

All of these images were shot with the Fuji XE1 and XF14. The first is a two image stitch with the last of the colour from the setting sun and with the Milky Way on the LH side of frame (will have to try and get a bit more detail out of it).

As per opening post
All of these images were shot with the Fuji XE1 and XF14
so no telescope, just a wide angle lens equivalent to 21mm in FF bodies. Just goes to show how big the Milky Way is :)

I just find difficult to believe a prime lens like XF14
practically with no magnification can take photos like
that. My next question, is how long did it take? Because
that view is hidden from the human eye.

Exposure for the 3rd image, was 25 seconds @ f2.8, ISO 2000. Exposure time any longer than 25 seconds you will start to see movement of the stars particularly towards the edge of frame. As you rightly point out, you cant see this detail with the naked eye so framing for composition is a bit of trial and error.

My latest attempt taken Saturday from my backyard. Could not manage a wider view as the roof of my house and surrounding trees encroach the framing.
