I could get this close because these like ducks they are accustomed to people. The bird was about 2 meters away from me.
I was using AFS 300F4 + TC1.4X. 1/250 f8. ISO 200. Handheld. Auto WB -2. EV -0.3.

Nah Neeper - Arthur was just saying they, like ducks, have become accustomed to having people around them. Probably so tame they don't even flinch until you pour the marinade on them...
It's actually a Eurasian Coot - Fulica atra - according to Morcombe's Field Guide to Australian Birds.
