Shooting Sydney Harbor

Postby Kakodrilo on Sun May 09, 2010 12:19 pm

Hi Guys,

I am planning on going to Sydney next Saturday to shoot the Opera House and the Bridge, preferable with sunset light and then by night, with those nice ligths reflected on the water. I know it is a touristic-ish shoot, but it is my last week in Australia and I have not done them yet ;)

Does anybody know a good spot to shoot them both at the same time? or with the city landscape on the background? I have thought somewhere near Admiralty House or from Luna Park, but I have never been there so no idea if those are ok places tho.

I can use either a 17-40mm or a 70-200 if the place is a bit far.

In addition, if anyone is interested on shooting those places, they are more than welcome.

Cheers

nuttin' wrong with that, everyones gotta have some cliche iconic images in their gallery  plus, its a great way to check your skills against some postcards, which some classify as images worth money.

its actually a bit of a hard one, the choice of venue is often dependent on sunset. A couple of winner positions no matter what, for me, would be (with teh first two being the preferred options):

1) Macquarie's Chair - you can get everything in there, excluding luna park (its a bit small). This is a great spot for a pano to incorporate the city skyline, SOH and SHB

2) North Sydney - kirribilli side, again you can get city skyline, SHB and SOH, this place also has the advantage you can take a short walk to get up close and personal with the bridge, you can also get close to luna park.

3) Observatory Hill - great view of teh SHB and luna park, no SOH though, however it is a short walk to get some views of the SOH. This location will not get everything in one shot though.

I will dig up some images and post them up to give you some ideas..

South Pylon - maybe another option for earlier in the day before sunset?

The date for the shooting has been moved to the Friday (this week), instead of the Saturday. Some "evil" friends will keep me in Wollongong to say goodbye, so I will be shooting the opera house and the harbour bridge on Friday at sunset/night.

I am worry the new date might be a problem for those willing to come but having to work. Hopefully see you there, I will post to finalise shooting point and such.

Here are two images I shot (no tripod at the time so camera was just on various stone walls) down on the Kirribilli side just over a week ago - you can just walk down the street (Broughton St) from Milsons Point station in just a few minutes:

(the first is an HDR of a couple manual long exposures, the second is a single long exposure)

If everything goes well I will be around 16:30 at Mrs. Mac's Chairs for the twilight at sunset (sunset is estimated to be at 17:03). Then I will move to Kirribilli, probably I will catch the Ferry from Circular to Luna Park, to shoot from there some night city landscapes. Not sure at what time I will be doing this as I might wait for it be darker.

Everydoby is more than welcome, I think I will be easy to spot: Tripod, blue/black lowepro backpack, canon camera.

Remorhaz: Those images look great!
