New Nikon glass on the way

ECS gave us a hint of this last week and it appears that nikonrumors have the good word that the 70-200/2.8 and 18-200 will be updated as early as this week.

http://nikonrumors.com/2009/07/28/af-s- ... tails.aspx
whats particualrly interesting is the claim that the 70-200 will have faster AF...WOW. considering how blisteringly fast the current version is, faster AF for the new one will be speical indeed.

still no 35/1.4afs or 85/1.4afs.

Nikon is just trying to catch up with Canon's magical 2.8 IS white version.....

Personally I didnt find the 'magical' white 2.8IS any faster to focus (on a 40D vs the Nikkor on my D300) it was HEAVIER though!

Shame about the lack of an AF-S 35mm f1.4 and an AF-S 85mm f/1.4...I wonder why a new 18-200....why not a FX equiv (28-300VR).

I agree Rooz, it is hard to imagine AFS much faster than the present 70-200. I am guessing this will be a very impressive lens.

Seriously, from what little use I have had with the Nikon variety, it is a sensational lens. Nikon will do very well to better it. Now, if only the Canon was black too, it is such an attention getter and is a pain in crowds.

i'd take a 70-200/4L IS over the 2.8 personally. if nikon made a similar spec lens to that then they wouldnt be able to make enuf of them.

well all have been released on the nikon website so let the lense lust begin.

Hmmm, how nice would a 35mm 1.2 AF-S lens be? Dream on dreamer I say :)

use the 200 f2 for a session, and you'll be sure to agree that there's plenty of room for improvement in the 70-200.

So whats the new 18-200 offering? Is it just a faster AF.

What I find odd is that Canon have more low f stop glass than Nikon - if one can make an f1.2 surely the other can!

I DON'T get the new 18-200. mine came with my DSLR , and i wouldn't update it. And Yes Roos your right where the hell is the 85 1.4 AFS or even the 80-400 AFS. Nikon are making updates of the same thing.

Not sure about the 18-200 but Nikon are on the ball with updating the 70-200. There's been a lot of talk and complaints about the current 70-200 with soft edges and vignetting on a FF. Since this is a primary lens for pretty much every pro in every photography field, it's a wise idea to update it. I know i don't really NEED to update, but I will anyway.

So be sure to put your cheap  second hand 70-200 up here  ...

I was looking through eGay and there seems to be a few 70-200's listed in the last few days, so there must be a few upgrading?

well, ECS have listed the price of the 70-200 VersII. $3195, a full $700 more than the last listing i saw for the previous model at ECS. as a side note, the d3s is listed at $6995, around $1400 more than the D3. all this with a strong dollar...

yepp, its official, they have gone insane.

That is very close to the $3200 that I was thinking and predicting since I saw the announcement.

Hopefully this will drive the older model prices down. What does the new lens offer that the old one didn't?

I would expect that price will have the opposite effect.

Close, but not the full picture. Official word from sources close to rumour mongers is that the spot price of gold and the extra embossed writing have significantly increased production costs.

Interesting price of $3195.

I decided to do a few calculations:
Item ECS AUD B&H USD USD>AUD (*0.88) Diff
D3x $10550 $7599 $8636 22%
D3s $6995 $5199 $5909 18%
D700 $3495 $3040 $3455 1% (Special. Non Special 7%)
70-200 VRII $3195 $2400 $2727 17%

:surrender:

Surely they can throw in a 'hybrid' VR?

It has VR II, nano crystal coating plus it fixes the problem of vignetting that some people have encountered with the older version of the lens on full frame Nikons (D700, D3, D3X). Note the vignette problem does not affect the D300 or any of the DX format DSLR's. It is also a bit heavier, probably due to the gold Gary refers to

According to Ken Rockwell, neither. The old lens alredy has VRII, AF is the same and the only difference is a lock switch for the zoom. Of course though, you have to take anything he says with a truckload of sodium chloride.

According to Moose Peterson, there are huge improvements in both shutter speed for hand holding and image quality.

three is no doubt there are improvements. ok...so what ? of course there are. there SHOULD be. every new product **should** constitute by default an improvement in performance. does that justify that sort of price increase ? its a full $1k more than the canon 70-200/2.8 L IS. yes, i get its a new lens but really come on.

i think its fuckin ridiculous to be perfectly frank.
