Jobo GIGA Vu Pro evolution - PSD

Hi,

I came across this review about the Giga Vu Pro:

Certainly looks promising with the features it has: calibrated LCD 640x480, NEF and other RAW support, DVI and USB, Wireless option to support cameras like D2X, etc

It replaces their existing Vu Pro. Certainly sounds nice. Their distributor in Australia is CR Kennedy. Indicative pricing was listed at $895USD for 120Gb drive.

Oh, forgot to mention, runs embedded Linux.

I think it's too much for what our photographers want.
Even with the Epson P2000 @ $610.00 GST Inc. is more than most people needed but not so many bite!!!!! I doubt of it very much when they see its price tag of US$895.00.

If you compare with the P-2000, the MSRP of the 40GB version is US$495. And unlike the P-2000 I gather that the setup is in firmware: you should be able to upgrade the disk in this fairly easily.

Personally I think some of these items try to spread themselves over too many markets: playback of video and music files seems like a gimmick to those people who just want a reliable and fast field storage device, and one that just eats into the battery life. Mind you, the battery life of this device does seem fairly impressive.

Of the devices with colour-LCD review capabilities this does seem like the most technically-interesting to me. It will be interesting to see where it ends up fitting into the market!
If you instead just want a fast and reliable field backup unit (possibly for use in conjunction with a laptop) then a CompactDrive or NextoDI is a much cheaper option.

It looks like it's specifically for pros. The epson seems more like an upscale consumer (I'd love one), but I find that pros don't seem to care about cost if it covers their bases better. For example, truer image representation on the screen is something that I could see a lot of pros being sticklers about. Likewise with the speed of transfer issue (4x the speed of the epson).

I would bet that Epson soon comes out with something similar, especially with the transfer speeds.

The pros doesn't want anything fancy of course money is not their objects, but they only want a fast transfer and large storage + long life battery, other than that they don't care about MP3 or MPEG4 or use the device as a presentation tools, I haven't seen any Pro running presentation from the PSD, perhaps mostly they used notebook as their tools of trade.

Perhaps for "Faked" Pro who has money and want to show it off.

Yes, maybe, but some wants something or everything but never use it.

Most of the PSD's don't have fantastic audio playback anyway, mind you.
