How do you all store your camera equipment when its not in use?

I currently have mine stored in a low cupboard in various airtight containers (1 lens per container). While this works okay, with a kid on the way having expensive camera gear in a low cupboard is not a good idea

I have been thinking of buying two Pelican cases and storing the gear in them (camera + short glass in one, long glass in the other). I seem to remember an issue with the 'foam' in the cases not being so good ... has this been fixed?

I just put them on my shelve (open to air) or its own cases/bag when not in use

I have a 3 drawer filing cabinet made out of wood. I have converted it into a low humidity cabinet by placing a low wattage lamp in the base. I have a thermometer and hygrometer in the next drawer up along with all of my lenses. The top drawer has bits and pieces.

I store my gear in large plastic tubs with clip-lock lids. Each one has a permanent container filled with Damprid (silica gel). This keeps the humidity, and therefore the mould, out. Especially needed here in Brisbane in summer, due to high humidity.

By bits'n'pieces in the top draw, you really mean your fine cuban cigars?

Yeah I want to store them somewhere to keep dust off and keep them out of prying hands, so on a shelf is no good! And they will end up sharing cupboard space with other stuff so I don't have the luxury of a separate piece of furniture to keep them in, so rules out sirhc's suggestion

Finch that's how I basically do mine now, but I think I need something more durable as these may end up being kept in a top shelf of a cupboard or something like that.

Don't store them in airtight containers! Too much humidity. Keep them in the camera bag and place it wherever you have room. Partially unzip the bag so air can get in.

I use a lockable electric dry cabinet , temp thing kicks in when the humidity gets to "X" amount .(The locks only good for keeping sticky beeks and fingers out ) 50 litre cab cost me about 250 bucks but well worth it for peace of mind .

while in japan i was stunned at the amount of storage stuff for humidity.

rows of what i thought were wide cooler fridges, and plastic containers with displays on them to tell you the water content of the air inside stacked to the roof.
and after being there in the wet season i can say it does get humid, so its no wonder really.

mine get a shelf, but perth isnt really that humid, just hot.

I have been thinking of getting one of these (http://www.drycabinet.com.au/main.html) , although the smallest one costs between $225-250, although seems large enough to hold a couple of bodies, lenses, etc.

I store my stuff in the same pelican case I bring to events....only thing diff is I add a packet of silican gel.

Should use some rubbers to keep them waterproof

Slightly offtopic (or is it back on topic?) I've been thinking about getting a large pelican case to store my gear and also to use as transport on long trips. Can anyone recommend where to buy them from ie somewhere cheap with decent stock levels?

Get the pelican cases from overseas, such as B&H.

Also get the padded inserts, not the foam insert...too answer DionM's question
