Kayaks at Manly with approaching storm

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

(Sounds like a Turner painting title!). I am still experimenting with my Canon 5D and took this shot at Manly. The kayaks are normally floating near the wharf but on this occasion, they were lined up for some prospective renters. This shot was taken with my 17-40 with an ISO of 1600 (forgot to change it ..doh).

Great image Sheila, I love the contrasty detail in the sky working with the bright kayaks on the beach.

Any PP on this? - the exposure for ground and sky looks very even

Just a tad Curves but nothing else. I am constantly amazed at the dynamics of the 5D. Also I now do little and in most cases, no sharpening.

Lovely image Sheila.
This shot was taken with my 17-40 with an ISO of 1600 (forgot to change it ..doh).
Don't you just hate it when you do that? I'm amazed at how little noise there is for such a high ISO...

Great example of the low Noise characteristics of the Canon. Had it been my D70 @ ISO 1600 I'd be considering throwing away a shot like that due to the high levels of noise.
Back to the image, I like it Shelia but it's not upto your usual high standards, I say give you another week to familarize yourself with your new camera and you'll be near on unstoppable.

A great photo Sheila. I love the contrast, bright colours and detail. And it's so sharp without any sharpening PPed in afterwards. Does the 5D have some good in camera sharpening capability or is this the result of a steady hand and great camera and lens combo? I guess at ISO1600 you've used a fast shutter speed.

I use Standard in Picture Styles (I have no idea why Canon has done this for the 5D). Its something I tend to ignore! I believe it replaced the parameters feature in the 20D.

Looks great Shiela. There is so much colour even at 1600iso. That 5D is a superb camera, especially in your hands.

Great time to take pics, before a storm

Although i reckon also that after a storm when the sun comes out and it is behind you with a dark brooding sky in front is also great, the air tends to be so clean/clear

A nicely balanced picture, Sheila. The sweep of the shoreline is well captured, and the colours and mood are gorgeous. I might've cloned out the little wotsit at the bottom LH corner.

I agree with Alpha_7 & ABG, the 5D's low noise at ISO 1600 is so forgiving, compared with some of the "smack self on the forehead" occasions when I've left my D70 at ISO 1600.

I love the mood you've got out of that sky and the bold color in the foreground, very strong image, nicely framed... I'd clone out the bit of oar in the BL cnr tho

Thanks all. I cannot wait til we get to NZ on 1 March to test the 5D and the 17-40 on the landscape. When we were there last year, I found this lens a tad too short.

Sheila - try and get to Mount Maunganui (Tauranga) - spectaular bay and ocean vistas. Wouldn't mind seeing some great shots of my old home town
