MYER Fashion show, 27th Feb. First pics

Hi all,

Thanks to Wendell, I got an opportunity to shoot MYER fashion show which took place in Melbourne yesterday. This was my first attempt at fashion photography and I'm not quite sure how badly I went. So any critique or suggestions are greatly appreciated. I used Nikkor 80-200mm f4.5-5.6 which is not the best lens, but that's all I have at the moment, in that range. I had to use ISO 640-800 which gave significant amount of noise in some images. The lens' sharpness is not best either. I really need to upgrade to Nikkor 80-200 f2.8 insteadThe other problem I had is sometimes I wanted a wider focal length, but that would require changing lens which I did not have time to do. 80 mm was too long in many cases, and I could not capture models in full length. May be I should have used my 50 mm instead.


First, a social pic taken at the arrival. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I am completely ignorant in anything to do with sports and whilst I know he is a swimer, can anyone give me his name? Pity his girlfriend/ partner is not looking at the camera. This was taken with Nikkor 50 mm f 1.4

Wow Alex, I wouldn't be too upset about those shots. Can you get me an invite next time. I'll even bring my 80-200 2.8. I think some of those cropped a bit tighter as upper body shots would look great as well.

I actually like that one with Michael Klim's partner not looking directly at the camera.

Nice work Alex, and I'd been more then happy with them for your first foray into fashion photography. We are spoilt on the forums here with Wendell, but with some practice and more appropriate lens, the skys the limit. Given the situation I'd say a few of these are sensational, please post more if you have some!

I agree tho, I wouldn't be too upset by these - look good to me. And that lens is plenty sharp from where i'm sitting!

Good stuff Alex...you're too hard on yourself sometimes For a first outing at a fashion show - especially as a lone ranger - those are some pretty great results.

Nice shots alex. I think the first one needs a crop. May be a portrait crop without the man on the side.

Well done Alex. Nice captures of the moment and mood of the models. Watch out for the colour cast - there's a tint of tungsten. Did you use your flash?

great job you managed to get through without a hitch, it actually goes to show you fashion runway photography is about two things, skill and negotiation. I noticed you did not get any shots of the fire in the middle of the catwalk, lot sof times you have to scope out the best locations to shoot and negotiate with production people and other photographers to get the best shots, all in all first try great job and a amazing opportunity as the Myer show pyrotechnics, production and the artistic direction were the best and most innovative ever in an Australian fashion show looking at the other photos from the media, makes fashion week and the David Jones show look like a walk in the park.

Alex, I think you've done a great job! The one with Michael Klim is very sharp. The colours inb the images are really good. I don't mind the crops, theres no 'fashion' on the models legs, but I suppose what I know about the world of fashion could be written on the head of a pin.

The third image of the woman in the blue dress seems a bit washed out, like you reduced the contrast a bit to much, making the black background a tad grey.

Thats my only criticism though, the images are really good!

Alex, had a quick look at these last nite but did not get to coment on them but mate, these are great pics. Going by what Wendel tells us this is not an easy feat to get into with all the compitition and and other photogs getting them great spots but for a first time pat yourself on the back, well done.

Thanks for all your comments, guys. This was certainly an exciting opportunity for me. I felt a lot of times like my equipment was so inferior looking at how all other photogs were set up with D2Xs and huge lenses, etc.

Arthur: Yes, I used flash in all of these photos

Wendell: Yeah was hard to get the shots of the fire and model of the same time. I should have used the 50mm to get fire and a model in. Otherwise it's either one or the other with 80-200 from where I was sitting, or a bit of both. I'm still going through the shots so there might be some more keepers. I think I have one or two with the fire and a model, but I will see if they are good enough to post here. Spots for photographers were already pre-allocated so I had to sit on the stairs a bit to the side with one other photog.

I will post some more later.

just post the images with the fire blurry or non blurry on the catwalk i thought the idea was so crazy i mean what if one of the models tripped and got her hair caught in the fire or the dress!!
what a liability nightmare
