Young woman on ferry - a candid

Postby Sheila Smart on Mon Mar 27, 2006 8:45 pm

This is a heavily cropped image of a young woman on the Manly ferry today. I shot this through the window while she was waiting to disembark. Which says a lot about the 5D and the 135 f/2

Excellent portrait, Sheila. I would have never thought it was shot through a window. Very sharp and nicely composed.

Very nice. Excellent tone and clarity

Gotta love 12+ megapixels - are you finding you are taking more shooting opportunites and then cropping?

Lovely shot Sheila - it's lovely and soft. I don't mean the image is soft, just the feeling.

Love it

Is it me, or is it a little noisy? In particular in the shadow area near her scarf...

I noticed that you had eye contact for the shot... What was her reaction to being photographed?
Cheers, John

Here is the original image (shot RAW) and no post processing and through glass (possibly that was where the noise came from :D )

It has a real National Geographic feel to it (as in one of those really engaging covers).

Leek - The shot was taken at ISO 1000, and through the window so I'd say the combination would result in the noise you seeing. Personally it doesn't really bother me, the eyes just keep drawing my attention.

The cropped version works better for me - no distractions. Its a great capture of her and her beautiful eyes.

Sheila

This is a fine image. You really show how powerful that camera is in skilled hands.

Thanks all. When I showed my husband (who is my most honest critic), he said he preferred the window shot too.

Sheila I am still interested to know of her reaction when she realised that she was being photographed.

Hi Sheila,

very well captured. Looked at the B&W version on your pbase site as well. I must say that I prefer the colour version.

Cheers,

She did not seem to mind. I am sure, with a face like that, she is used to having her photo taken. If she had objected, I certainly would not have posted this image but it would have remained on my hard drive.

great face, great light, great shot, I like the un-cropped shot better but they are both good.

It shows what we will lose if street shooting is restricted or banned.

Sheila, that is a wonderful shot of a beautiful face. I'm sure the young lady would love to have a copy - it's a shame she never will.
